What a week for Bioshock Infinite, huh? Not only is Ken Levine the latest guest on the Nerdist Podcast, but Irrational released its first DLC pack and debuted the trailer for the exquisitely fun game’s second DLC, entitled Burial at Sea. As you might have guessed – and seen snippets of during the main game – this DLC is taking us back to where it all began: Rapture, Andrew Ryan’s objectivist paradise under the sea. Whereas the first DLC pack, Clash of Clouds, was more of a straightforward, survival-style arena shooter, Burial at Sea takes us on a thrilling solo adventure in two parts with Booker DeWitt as Andrew Ryan’s private investigator and an older, sultrier Elizabeth, set against the backdrop of a pre-fall Rapture in 1958.
In an interview with Game Informer, Levine explained the impetus behind the DLC: “We kicked around a lot of ideas for what to do, and we ended up settling on the most complicated and expensive one. I have this image in my head of Elizabeth dressed like a femme fatale coming into Booker’s office in Rapture. Well, how do we get there? A lot of people have asked us to tell a story about pre-fall Rapture. To me, it wasn’t really interesting, because it’s the midichlorian problem. We already told the story in the logs, so it would just be demonstrating that, and that’s not surprising or interesting.”
The DLC, which will roll out in two parts for $14.99 each, is unique in that part one is entirely devoid of combat. Rather, as players learn more about those who lived and worked in Rapture and the various factions that formed, exploration and investigation will be paramount to solving the mystery. Series fans can expect to see many familiar faces including the eminently terrifying Big Daddies before they made the transition from automated maintenance ‘bots to makeshift babysitters. One thing is for sure, though: Clash in the Clouds has wet our whistle, and now we’re eager for Burial at Sea‘s main course.
