For a decisive moment, albeit brief, Ben Folds’ and my mind were one. That transient cosmic alignment was borne from our love of Montell Jordan’s jam-of-the-century, “This Is How We Do It”. Also we accidentally wore the same clothes, so there is that.
On our latest episode of Celebrity Playlist, I talk to Ben about the music that he remembers listening to at certain, significant moments in his life, including when he first learned to play piano, and when he was recording in the early days of Ben Folds Five. What I found, which should not have surprised me, was that Folds has a holistic appreciation for all kinds of classic and catchy music from old greats like Elton John, to 2000s pop staples like Britney Spears. For any fan of Folds’ music, his conversance in all genres of music feels like a given, and it was such a treat to hear him wax poetic about all his different influences and tastes.
After you’ve watched the latest episode of Celebrity Playlist, be sure to also listen to Ben’s episode of the Nerdist Podcast, and pick up his forthcoming record with yMusic, titled So There, out September 11. The legendary pianist is also on tour, so be sure to catch his rousing live performance.
