Until today, a single promotional image was all the preview we had of the Batgirl-centric “A Matter of Family” downloadable content chapter for the recently released Batman: Arkham Knight. The first trailer finally gives us a clearer picture of the nature of the mission. It was already revealed that the story would take place before the events of Arkham Asylum, and focus on the fateful rivalry between Barbara Gordon and the Joker, so that much has been no surprise. It is somewhat surprising, however, to see that the Tim Drake version of Robin is Barbara’s partner for the mission. There’s not a clear timeline in the Arkham universe of when each Robin actually became a Robin, but given Barbara’s past closeness with Dick Grayson, it would’ve been a great opportunity for them to have teamed up in a video game.
Regardless of Robin’s identity and the timeline questions it may or may not pose, the above trailer does paint a clear picture of the kind of gameplay to expect from Barbara’s mission. She apparently also has “detective vision” built into her cowl just like Batman, and a big component of her combat methods will be utilizing her hacking and networking skills to manipulate her surroundings, and weaken her foes before swooping down to attack. It looks like an exciting new battleground for gamers to enjoy, as Joker has set up base on an abandoned oil rig-turned-amusement park. Harley Quinn is at Joker’s side through the mission, and is donning her original Bruce Timm-designed costume.
“A Matter of Family” will focus on the events following Commissioner James Gordon’s kidnapping by the Joker. As a condition, Joker warns that if Batman sets foot on the Seagate Amusement Park where Gordon is being held, he’ll kill the Commissioner instantly. This presents the opportunity for Batgirl to take the lead and save her father, with assistance from Robin. Developed on the Arkham Knight engine by WB Games Montreal (Batman: Arkham Origins) the add-on chapter will be released as a $6.99 download on both the Playstation Network and Xbox Live on July 21st. Players who are Arkham Knight Season Pass holders will gain early access to “A Matter of Family” on July 14th.
