Banksy, the UK Street Artist that rocketed into international fame with the 2010 film Exit Through The Gift Shop, has helped set up a new major art installation in Weston-super-Mare, UK. The installation has taken the form of a a disturbing and dystopian-style amusement park that has been aptly named “Dismaland.”
The attraction has taken over a derelict swimming resort in the area and turned it into the most off-putting version of Disneyland one may ever see. The park comes complete with its own creepy, rotted-out Disney-esque castle, a giant, colorful pinwheel that is choked up with plastic, and plenty of disinterested Dismaland employees milling about ready to ignore you when they can.
The sight can best be described as curated by Banksy, since it seems the overall concept may have been his, but he is only one of many artists that have contributed to it. According to their own website, Dismaland is the work of over fifty different artists from around the world, Banksy being just one among them. The works all tend to hold the same sort of message and style: anti-corporate and anti-consumerist messages that shed light on social issues in a macabre or darkly humorous manner.
The installation will only be open for five weeks, starting tomorrow, August 22nd, and running until September 27th, but the site will also host several shows within that time frame. Check out the gallery below for a closer look at parts of the park, and if you are near the area, or willing to travel for it, check out the official site for Dismaland for more information.
