While Captain America: Civil War is still a force at the box office, comic book movie fans are already looking ahead to Avengers: Infinity War, the two-part film which may feature an even larger roster of heroes and villains. Maybe not the 67 characters that were initially rumored, but that may not be too far off!
Yesterday, senior editor Dan Casey hosted Infinity War screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely for a live interview on Facebook, where they all but confirmed that the Guardians of the Galaxy will be a part of the Avengers sequels!
As seen in the clip above, Markus said “let’s put it this way: you know who owns that [Infinity] Gauntlet, right? And you know who’s in another movie, and his kids are in that movie…you do the math!”
Guardians of the Galaxy was Josh Brolin’s first time as Thanos in the MCU, and that film also introduced moviegoers to Thanos’ adopted daughters Gamora and Nebula. It’s a pretty open and shut case for their inclusion in Infinity War, because it’s not just the adoptive sisters who have a stake in what happens to Thanos. Drax the Destroyer’s entire purpose in this life is to avenge his family by killing the big purple guy. He’s not that far off from his comic book counterpart in that regard.
It’s easy to assume that Peter Quill is the only member of the Guardians with a direct link to Earth, but it’s entirely possible that Rocket Raccoon is also from our world, whether he knows it or not! Somehow, we doubt that director James Gunn will keep Rocket’s convoluted comic book origins, which involved an entire planet populated with anthropomorphic animals. Maybe Rocket’s potential ties to Earth would give him further motivation to help his teammates take down Thanos in Infinity War.
