AVENGERS 2 Finds Its Ultron in James Spader

He’s managed Dunder Mifflin. He’s helped pass the Thirteenth Amendment. He’s helping the FBI catch the world’s most dangerous criminals. And now he’s going to destroy the Avengers, because that’s the logical next step for James Spader, who has been cast as Hank Pym’s deadliest robotic creation Ultron in Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. That’s right, folks, the rumors about Paul Bettany can be laid to rest because Joss Whedon has set Spader to play everyone’s favorite titular murderbot. And to make matters better, we have the exclusive first image of what Spader will look like as Ultron.

Pretty convincing, huh? One matter that has fanned the flames of fandom is the issue of Ultron’s origin. Canonically, Ultron was created by Hank Pym, but given that Pym has yet to appear in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe and likely won’t until Phase III in Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man, it’s still possible that there’s some credence to the plot points laid out in the Paul Bettany rumor, which you can read for yourself as I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone here. Unfortunately, that’s pretty much all we know at the moment. Smart money would be on Spader either doing mo-cap or simply providing the voice. Who knows? Maybe they’ll go full on Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze and just cover him with some goofy ass adamantium tin foil.

See? Wouldn’t that be awesome? Come on, you know you’re thinking it. What do you think of this casting? Let us know in the comments below or hit me up on Twitter.

  1. James Spader is a great choice to play Ultron. His voice is very smooth and monotone. Although he doesn’t seem to be much of an animated actor. I hope he does mo-cap I like that there are actual actors playing these computer generated parts. If Ruffalo can put on the motion capture suit than Spader can as well. It’ll also be a nice reunion for Downey Jr. and Spader.

I have enjoyed his work so this is better news then the Ben (Batman) Affleck .

AND DONT REMIND ME OF SCHWARZENAGGER AND THAT MOVIE AS A WHOLE!! WHAT WERE THEY SMOKING WHEN THEY THOUGHT OF THE “BAT CREDIT CARD”??????

  4. Trevor V says:

they could always just introduce Hank Pym in the Avengers 2 or another phase 2 movie. Well have to keep our eyes peeled in Guardians, Winter Soldier, and Dark World. but i did hear something about having Tony Stark be the one that creates Ultron.(theory based on footage from SDCC)

  5. RG says:

I just figured it out: They’ll DEFINITELY use Ultron to introduce Hank Pym. Why? Because the Ant-Man movie is already in the works, and the general population doesn’t have any idea who Ant-Man is, so they’re using Avengers 2 to generate awareness of the character…

It seems so simple and obvious now.

He’s got a GREAT voice. That’s really what Ultron needs. There’s no way he’ll be the *actual* Ultron, just the voice.

  7. Wesley P. Colvin says:

Nuanced? Ultron doesn’t have to be nuanced. He’s absolutely !@$ing evil! By removing his connection to Hank Pym, the most interesting aspect of the character has to made up for. Specifically, the fact that Ultron was originally built by Henry Pym and modeled after his mind. Pym is bipolar. That kind of carried over into Ultron. Then there’s the Oedipus complex ‘I have to kill daddy’ bit.

  8. Kristoffer says:

He’s a good actor who will bring some great nuance to the role of Ultron.
