Well slap a Tesseract on us and call us Meg Murry! According to a new, super-casual mention from Deadline, word on the street is that Selma helmer Ava DuVernay has been offered the director gig for Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time movie. And not only that, but she’s apparently being courted for Colin Trevorrow’s next original film, the science fiction-y Intelligent Life. In other words, everything is coming up Ava and we, for one, are here for it.
And the bonus bit? Nerdist can confirm that the Deadline report is indeed accurate. So fingers crossed, y’all!
We’ve long wanted DuVernay to get into the genre game—ever since the time she was being courted to direct Black Panther. Her ability to portray nuanced character and complicated dealings makes A Wrinkle in Time the perfect world in which for her to play. After all, Madeleine L’Engle’s seminal story has a little bit of everything: aliens, other planets, government cover-ups, top-secret tech, and hard-worn heroes. (It’s layered, is what we’re saying.)
But if that doesn’t work out, perhaps Trevorrow’s Intelligent Life will. According to Deadline, “It’s a fable about a UN worker” who works in a department tasked with representing mankind should “contact with aliens” ever occur. The only hitch? Well the UN worker “falls for a mystery woman who turns out to be an alien.” (And it seems as though that alien will be played by Lupita Nyong’o, if The Hollywood Reporter is to be believed.)
