Although Disney’s Tim Burton-directed adaptation of Alice in Wonderland was the first big live-action adaptation of one of their classic animated films to make big bucks for the company, it was really last year’s Maleficent that really cemented Disney’s reimaginings as a viable franchise. Despite getting so-so reviews, audiences all over the world flocked to see this movie, to the tune of $760 million worldwide. Since then we’ve had Cinderella, another great success, and some seven other live-action version of animated films all in different stages of development, including Beauty and the Beast and Dumbo, among several others.
Now, The Wrap reports that Disney is courting Angelina Jolie back for a sequel to her star turn as Maleficent. With the exception of one sequel to Tomb Raider, Jolie has never really been game for returning to roles for sequels, including those that were in development for hits like Salt and Wanted. Still, despite the movie’s big success last year, this one still seems like a head-scratcher. There really is no story set after Sleeping Beauty to base it off of (unlike Alice’s Adventure Through The Looking Glass, the other sequel to a live-action adaptation that Disney is releasing).
With all the other animated-turned-live-action adaptations in the pipeline, this one feels a bit unnecessary, and this is coming from someone who liked the original movie. As of right now, director Robert Stromberg isn’t expected to return, although Linda Woolverton, who wrote the original, is slated to come back and script the sequel. I’d say she has her work cut out for her.
So what do you think of a potential Maleficent 2? Is it more of a good thing, or better left alone? Let us know in the comments below!
