The British crooner walked away with four awards—including a sweep of all the major categories, like Song Of The Year, Record Of The Year, Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Performance—and also performed a touching rendition of his hit “Stay With Me,” thanks to a little help from Mary J. Blige.
Okay, so Sam Smith totally killed it, but that doesn’t mean the other performers didn’t bring the house down, too. Take, for example, Ed Sheeran. He performed his latest single, “Thinking Out Loud,” with a guitar-solo assist from John Mayer and it was totally magical.
Lady Gaga‘s duet with Tony Bennett of “Cheek To Cheek” was positively radiant. Not only did the two sound sublime together, but it’s really nice to see Mother Monster strip away all the flash and show off what she does best—sing!
One of the most awkward—yet awesome—moments happened at the beginning of the show when AC/DC kicked the ceremony off with a medley of their greatest hits, like “Rock Or Bust” and “Highway To Hell.” When the camera first panned across all the attendees and their handlers, it was a little off-putting to see so many suited middle-aged men rockin’ out, but we totally get it. It’s AC FRIGGIN DC!

Pharrell leaves his 40-gallon hat at home for his performance of “Happy,” featuring famed film composer Hans Zimmer.
