Last week we were excited to see Evan Peters’ devilish mug return to American Horror Story as Mr. March. However, considering how many familiar faces have a tendency reappear across several seasons, we figured it wouldn’t be long before somebody else turned up. That’s why when Angela Bassett made her Hotel debut we were thrilled, but not surprised. In “Mommy” we learned about one of The Countess’ former lovers, saw Detective Lowe continue to struggle with his marriage, and witnessed two mothers take drastic measures after losing their sons.
If there’s anything this week’s episode taught us about the Countess, it’s that she’s used to tossing her lovers aside once she gets bored. After being kicked to the curb and replaced by Tristan, Donovan wandered the streets, feeding on junkies, and was eventually captured by Ramona Royale (Bassett), a former actress and one of the Countess’ ex-girlfriends. Apparently the blonde vampire turned Ramona back in the 70’s and lived with her for the next two decades.
But, when Ramona realized things weren’t going to last, she set her sights on someone new and turned him. He was apparently the man she wanted to spend the rest of eternity with. Too bad the Countess saw to it that he got a bullet in the head instead. From that moment, the girls’ love affair was over, and Ramona began to plot her revenge. Since she had something precious ripped from her life, she planned on figuring out how to kill The Countess’ arsenal of vampire children, which is where Donovan comes in. But, seeing as Donovan no longer calls the Cortez home, Ramona ended up letting him go.
Speaking of those pesky blood-sucking children, after battling grief for years, Alex was finally reunited with Holden. We learned a lot about her this week, including the fact that she attempted suicide after Holden’s abduction, and resented John for the whole thing. Although it seemed like they were finally going to kiss and make up, Alex served John divorce papers, and left him alone in his hotel room.
On top of his home-life struggles, the Detective investigated another crime related to the mysterious Ten Commandments-themed serial-killing spree. Aside from hearing Sally mention the Ten Commandments in passing, we didn’t learn much about the case this week. However, John did arrest Sally on suspicion of being involved with what’s been going on. Fortunately for her, she’s a ghost and doesn’t have to worry about the inconvenience of going to prison; all she had to do was vanish into thin air on the elevator ride down.
As for Tristan, he tried to seduce and kill Will Drake as retaliation for his plan to destroy the bizarre floor where Mr. March resides. But, just as the new vamp was about to stick a knife in the hotel’s owner, the Countess showed up to put a stop to it. After trying to sleep with him later on, she revealed to Tristan that they will be able to off him once they get married and she steals every last penny.
With nowhere else to go, Donovan wound up back at the Cortez. Despite having a brutal fight with Iris towards the beginning of the episode, he sought her out because he realized that nobody would love him as much as she did. Unfortunately, by the time Donno made it back to her room, it was too late. She’d already asked Sally to dose her with a serious amount of narcotics–which apparently wasn’t enough to do the trick because she had to use a plastic bag to finish the job. Distraught, Donovan used his blood to turn Iris into a vampire.
