After filling in for Jon Stewart on The Daily Show while he was away shooting his feature film debut Rosewater, John Oliver became a familiar and beloved face to the late-night satire audience which ultimately lead to him anchoring his own weekly show on HBO. In its premiere season, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver quickly became an increasingly popular political satire show for HBO. Now, with their sophomore season right around the corner, the series promises to changing everything up! In this new teaser for the upcoming premiere, the announcer promises that all bets are off: Last Week Tonight will be adding a pony, Oliver solving crimes with said pony, Oliver playing the role of a single dad to a baby and not one but two sets of multicultural twins. Or, none of that.
Oliver, of course, proves to be comfortable with none of that and would prefer to keep everything basically the same. In the end, the host promises no improvements for its second season, returning on Sunday, February 8 at 11PM EST to HBO, and for most of us fans out there, that will be just fine.
While Last Week Tonight introduced many a ridiculous thing last season (a salmon cannon, dogs reenacting Supreme Court decisions, a take down of pumpkin spice food items and more) the show also shed light on some really important domestic and international issues including the US military use of drones, climate change, civil forfeiture, student debt and many other issues.
