UPDATE: According to The Wrap and Page Six, Disney has finally found its young Han Solo. If the reports are true (fingers crossed), Hail Caesar‘s Alden Ehrenreich will be joining a young Chewbacca in Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s Star Wars anthology spinoff. More details in our original story below:
Deadline was the first outlet to report that Ehrenreich has seemingly become the frontrunner, after having beaten out some of the other actors up for the role of Han Solo, including Taron Egerton and Jack Reynor. Deadline’s sources are claiming that Ehrenreich’s “impressive performance” is what gave him the edge after several screen tests. Nerdist has reached out to Disney for comment, but we have not yet heard back at this time.
Ehrereich isn’t exactly a household name, but he’s been a professional actor for over a decade and he had a breakout role in Hail, Caesar! earlier this year, in addition to his upcoming untitled Howard Hughes film for director Warren Beatty. Ehrereich has also starred in Beautiful Creatures, Blue Jasmine, and Twixt.
Very little is known about the story for the Han Solo anthology film, but it’s likely to tell the early days of Han’s partnership with Chewbacca, possibly even getting into how they met. The Han Solo film was co-written by Jon Kasdan and his father, Lawrence Kasdan, one of the writers of The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and The Force Awakens. The LEGO Movie and 21 Jump Street directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord are slated to direct the Han Solo movie, which will be released on May 25, 2018.
