Last summer, Nathan Fillion casually mentioned that his dream superhero role would be Booster Gold, the arrogant hero from the future who has often been paired with Blue Beetle as a comedic superhero duo. Just a few weeks later, word broke that an actual Booster Gold and Blue Beetle movie is in the works with The Flash and Supergirl executive producer Greg Berlanti attached to direct!
Naturally, Fillion’s name came up several times as fans offered their dream cast for the Booster Gold and Blue Beetle movie. And who better to play Blue Beetle than Fillion’s friend, Alan Tudyk? Fillion and Tudyk previously starred together in the classic Joss Whedon sci-fi series, Firefly and its theatrical incarnation, Serenity. They are back together again in Con Man, the new web series created by Tudyk.
During New York Comic Con, Tudyk was asked whether he would want to star as Blue Beetle opposite Fillion’s Booster Gold. And while Tudyk didn’t seem to be familiar with the project, he said, “That’s great. If it’s working with Nathan, I’m in… Also, being a bug for me? I’d like that. Roly-poly is nice. I’d like to be one of them. That’s what we called them back in Texas, but they’re almost a beetle.”
While it would have been more encouraging if Tudyk had a greater familiarity with the characters, the comedic chemistry is the most important thing for any live-action Booster and Beetle project. And that’s something that Tudyk and Fillion already have in abundance. But as much fun as it is to dream cast the film, it’s far more likely that Warner Bros. will look at much younger actors for its buddy comedy superhero film.
