While we’re all waiting for the new episodes of Adventure Time to begin airing, Cartoon Network has dropped some decidedly unmathematical news: the series is coming to an end in 2018.
Via Deadline, the good news is that there are still two more seasons of Adventure Time on the way. The eighth season has been finished, and the ninth and final season is currently in production. Additionally, there will also be Adventure Time specials and miniseries that will debut over the next two years.
“Adventure Time was a passion project for the people on the crew who poured their heart into the art and stories,” said series creator Pendleton Ward in a statement. “We tried to put into every episode something genuine and telling from our lives, and make a show that was personal to us, and that had jokes too! I’m really happy that it connected with an audience for so long. It’s a special thing, I think.”
The series debuted on Cartoon Network in 2010 and quickly found a cult following among all ages, which has only continued to grow. Adventure Time followed the misadventures of Finn the Human and Jake the Dog in the bizarre Land of Ooo, as they encountered a number of strange and familiar characters.
One of the ongoing themes in Adventure Time has been the mythology of the “Great Mushroom War,” which may have transformed the present day world into the Land of Ooo that we know and love. Remember, the show does technically take place in a post-apocalyptic future… it’s just a very pleasant one. Ward has often hinted that there are more stories to explore dealing with the backstory of the series, and hopefully he’ll get around to that before the end.
There is also the question of what kind of ending the show should get. Will it be something that changes the status quo? Or should Jake and Finn get a Calvin and Hobbes style ending which suggests that the real adventures are never-ending? We’ll find out in two years.
