After teasing the first moments of a new single earlier this week and penning a thoughtful letter about growing as a person and artist, Adele has officially returned with a mournful, sepia-toned video for “Hello”, the first single from her forthcoming album 25, due out November 20 via XL. The Xavier Dolan-directed video stars Tristan Wilds and was shot in Montreal.
If you are the dude that broke Adele’s heart all those years ago, 1. You suck, 2. Thank you. If you are Adele and are reading The Nerdist on the biggest day you’ve had in the last four years, 1. We love you, 2. We’ve missed you 3. Let’s go shopping for new phones together, because I am sure we can find you some new hotline bling with a reasonable data plan for all those roaming fees you racked up from vexed calls made from the woods.
In all seriousness though, the new single is a shimmering, beautiful ballad that finds Adele way on the other side of a traumatic experience, trying to take stock of all the events that have led her to this point. Although I was not expecting a slow burn to be her first single, “Hello” has already grown on me and I am very curious how 25 will compare to her magnum opus. Will she have songs that celebrate her current relationship? Will she collaborate with Sam Smith and make every old person pine for the days when music was classy and simple? Will she ever roll out of the deep? Only time will tell.
