The zombie infested mazes based on AMC’s The Walking Dead are always the most popular attractions at the Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios in Hollywood, with wait times that sometimes clock in at over two hours. So it’s no surprise that the folks at Universal are planning to bring it to the park full time, announcing that The Walking Dead Attraction is coming to Universal Studios Hollywood year round.
Based on what we see in the video announcement above, it looks to be an almost exact replica of what they do for Halloween, with park patrons walking around in some kind of run down part of the backlot, being chased by hungry walkers. According to EW, the new permanent version of the attraction will have “authentic walker make-up effects, sophisticated animatronic walkers, substantially more detailed set design and costuming, and highly recognizable props replicated from the series.”
It’s also possible that since this will be a more permanent attraction, they’ll add more elements from the show, like cast member lookalikes. So you can maybe fight off zombies with
Tyreese, Beth, Andrea, Mika, Lizzie, Hershel, T-Dog, Dale….actually, maybe it’s best to play it safe and only hire actors to play Rick, Michonne and Daryl. Maybe Glenn can seemingly get killed halfway through the maze, only to appear safe and sound at the end when you leave.
In past Halloween Horror Nights Walking Dead mazes, they’ve always been tied into whatever is going on in the show that season. Last year there was the “Wolves Not Far” theme, and before that, you had to surivive the horrors of Terminus. It’ll be interesting to see if they keep updating the attraction, or if it will just be a more generalized “we’re in Georgia, walkers are everywhere, life sucks” type deal. In any event, expect it to be one of the most popular attractions at Universal Studios once it opens. No word yet on a similar version coming to Universal in Orlando. Sorry, East Coast.
You can watch the announcement video for the attraction above. The Walking Dead opens in Universal Studios Hollywood summer 2016.
