Violence. Is Never. The. Answer.
But it sure as hell does make for an entertaining movie sequence, and it’s okay to admit that. A good fight scene, where two characters go at it with fisticuffs or swords (or one character and a swarm of anonymous henchmen who didn’t talk things through beforehand), can not only elevate a story thematically and enhance the plot, but just be totally freaking awesome to watch.
And filmmakers know it, which is why so many movies have fight sequences in them, as evident in this super-cut from 86 different films.
Put together by the YouTube user Robert Jones, this is actually his third (and apparently final) installment in his fighting montage series, and this time he wanted to go for something “darker and grittier.” I don’t know if all of the clips he’s used perfectly fit that description, but the video is full of punching, and I’ve said it many times before: people love punching.
You know this is a damn fine montage too, because it includes the greatest cinematic fight ever: They Live. (NSFW!)
There is a massive array of types of fights here, from straight up bare-knuckle brawling, to organized martial arts fighting and boxing, to the reckless swinging of lead pipes and axes, to lightsaber-armed stormtrooper stare-downs (“Traitor!”). Also, glass windows and glass products seem ripe for destruction when a big screen brawl is taking place. Apparently, it isn’t enough to avoid punches and kicks—you also need to avoid shards of broken glass everywhere.
But when a movie gets a fight sequence right? Yippee ki yay.
