In the world of the internet, smartphones, and spoilers, it’s pretty hard to surprise people anymore. Well, Bad Robot managed to do just that the other night with the trailer premiere of 10 Cloverfield Lane. J.J. Abrams calls it the “blood relative” to the 2008 found footage monster movie (What would a “related by marriage” movie be?). The entirety of the trailer takes place in an underground bunker. One would think it wouldn’t take long to come up with some sort of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt comparison. Little did we know “wouldn’t take long” meant “less than a day.”
YouTuber Glen Tickle took it upon himself to re-imagine the new trailer, this time adding in the theme from the hit Netflix series. With this addition, the trailer looks more like a fun family comedy instead of an intense thriller that may or may not be a direct sequel to Cloverfield. It also makes you wonder what the show would have been like if she exited the bunker to 70-foot monsters running around destroying everything.
I for one am hoping 10 Cloverfield Lane delves more into the invading monster world. Not being completely sold on found footage, Cloverfield showed me that when used right, its storytelling capabilities can be downright scary.
10 Cloverfield Lane, starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Gallagher, Jr., and John Goodman (and probably monsters) opens in theaters and IMAX on March 11, 2016.
So what do you think? Is this trailer for a movie, or just the dark and gritty season 2 of Kimmy Schmidt? Let me know on Twitter or sound off in the comments below.
